debt for Art's sake is a parody brand that grew out of some reflections on the increasing conflation of imaging technology and high priced, often corporate sponsored arts education. As part of an exhibition at the Rochester Institute of Technology hand screen printed, debt for art's sake T-shirts were displayed and offered for sale. Gallery patrons were encouraged to purchase hand screen printed t-shirts --for one dollar each-- in a mock effort to counteract my debt for Art's sake while the buyer joined the ranks of those in debt for Art's sake. A simple mechanism was included for patrons to vote "satisfied" or "dissatisfied" with an aspect of the debt they had accrued as a result of tuition and technology costs associated with their Art production. This was accomplished by placing money or voucher (in the form of a receipt for a technology purchase or tuition bill) in one of two labeled plexi ballot boxes. The resulting tallies of this sale/vote were visible to subsequent gallery goers as each one dollar bill equaled one sale equaled one vote. The total for the first opening reception was about 75 percent dissatisfied and 25 percent satisfied. debt for Art's sake t-shirts are also available upon request and a running tally of 'satisfied' vs. 'dissatisfied' customers will be maintained.
