Giovanna Chesler
Giovanna Chesler Through her narrative and documentary films, Giovanna explores constructions of gender, the body, sexuality, and women's health. Recent work includes the feature documentary Period: The End of Menstruation (16mm, 2006, 54min.) which examines the debate around menstrual suppression. As millions of women and girls take shots and pills to stop their periods, the conception of menstruation, the body, and health changes. The film raises questions about what is 'natural' 'normal' and what it means to bleed. (http://www.periodthemovie.com) HPV Boredom (2006/2007, Video, 4 min) is a You Tube based video performance the presents a woman stuck in bed, recovering from an HPV related surgery.
Giovanna's films have screened extensively and competitively in fifteen countries, and garnered awards including the Gold Plaque for Best Student Documentary from the Chicago International Film Festival - 2000. Short films include BeauteouS: The Trilogy three portraits of three sisters and their relationships to beauty (BeauteouS: Stephanie, BeauteouS: Giovanna and BeauteouS, 16mm, 43min, 2000-2002) and hand-some (16mm, 13min, 2004) an experimental doc on a failing lesbian relationship and the failures of documentary.
