Olive Demetrius

| Activist, singer, spoken word artist and budding filmmaker whose works encompass a wide range of communication. The topics that move her are the most personal race, class, and gender terrorism on a global and local scale. Through the subjective she brings about a deeper understanding of our collective human voice. "I hope to spark questions to challenge what we see and how we consume images. Through the re-evaluation of our society can we truly understand the strength and the weakness within."
She began her career as a spoken word artist 9 years ago. Her intuitive style is the mingling of song and verse. Her musical influences are Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson. Her voice wavers between a beseeching croon and fierce gospel shout.
· Published in the anthology Day of the Poet Vol. I. This publication out of Brooklyn College was to commemorate a writing workshop where Allen Ginsberg was prominently featured in one of his final performances.
