Beatriz Flores Gutiérrez
With roots in the vibrant movements of Latin American Literature and Experimental Theater in Mexico City, Beatriz' experimental films La Cara, and Godot is Downtown reflect these influences. Other 16mm shorts bespeak of the experience of transculturalism and alienation, Portrait of a Lie, Filmínimo, Letters. A highlight in her career is her participation in Berkeley's community radio with Serious Humor, a multicultural account of what it takes to laugh. On People's Radio she brings about the politics of airwave's ownership, and the community's struggle to rescue their captured radio station. In other documentaries Beatriz is concerned with Toxic Racism, Domestic Violence, Acquaintance Rape, and Immigration.
Her most recent documentary work on the Mexico-USA Border, Beatriz uses video as dialogical tool; traveling between both sides of the Border she brings stories from Immigrants, Immigration Scholars, and Humanitarian Groups on both sides of the border, who partake in the ever fluctuating socio-political discourses in the context of neoliberalism, but within the framework of a stronger social movement that seeks to reconcile its impact.
Beatriz' newest personal work is interdisciplinary, in her Transformational Video Series she mixes performance, healing rituals, and archetypal psychology.
Beatriz lives in Olympia, Washington and teaches at The Evergreen State College.
