David Gracon

Documentary/Video Art/Activism

David received his master's degree from the University at Buffalo in Media Study and Sociology. His production interests include documentary, experimental documentary/video, diary, and collage. He taught video and film interpretation at UB for two years, and video and sound art at the University of Rochester. After a brief stint as the technical director of Squeaky Wheel, Buffalo Media Resources, he has since moved to Kanazawa-City Japan to teach English and make new work. Other interests include zines, underground music, punk, activism, travel, subcultures, and this Japanese video game where the sole object is to walk a dog. He intends to be the first person from his family to visit the demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea.

Video Works (Selected) Occupation, 2003, 60min. This work in progress is a diary/documentary loosely based on the politics of travel and globalization in contemporary Japan.

Flower Viewing in Tokyo, 2003, 3min. A documentary video comparing homelessness and the tradition of flowing viewing in Tokyo, Japan.

America at War, 2002, 3min, Experimental collage exploring the socialization of war and masculinity in American culture.

The Elevator, 2002 1min, Experimental representation of the 9-11 tragedy.

Imperial Tourism, 2001, 28min, MA Thesis. An experimental documentary exploring the implications of cultural representation, globalization and language in contemporary Poland.

How Memory Works, 2001, 8min. Abstract video and audio collage exploring the limitations of memory and recollection.

Breaking the Chain, 2001, 3min. Experimental video and audio appropriation challenging the cultural construction of gender and sexuality.

We Ride Bikes! 2000, 8min. A documentary of Buffaloís first critical mass bicycle ride.

Unreal is Here, 2000, 3min. Experimental video dealing with the hyper reality of contemporary media and entertainment programming.

She Paints Me, 2000, 1min. Experimental film and video about the loss of a friend.

A Star is Born, 1999, 20min, Senior Thesis. A documentary exploring the complexities of a student beauty pageant.

EXHIBITIONS & SCREENINGS (Selected) August 2003 Evolutionary Girls Club art and activist collective. Matsumoto and Kanazawa, Japan. Screened "America at War" with traveling multi-media exhibition.

June 2003 Jettison, International Saloon, Kanazawa, Japan. Screened "Nomachi Sports Day" and "Flower Viewing in Tokyo," along with various documentary photo prints. The exhibition also featured works by other international artists living in Japan.

March 2003 New Music and Video Art, Machinohana-San Gallery, Kanazawa, Japan. Performed live audio composition to experimental video and screened various video shorts.

January 2003 Cities Without Citizens: Statelessness and Intimacy in Contemporary Art and Architecture. Rosenbach Museum and Library, Philadelphia, PA. Screened "Imperial Tourism."

November 2002 Eco-Sig Environmental Conference, Kyoto, Japan. Presented lecture and video "Portrait of a Protest" based of the Free Trade Around the Americas and anti-globalization movement.
