Experimental Media Artist

 

Stephanie Gray is an experimental media (film, video, sound, spoken word) artist living in Buffalo NY whose work often explores feminist, lesbian, class, urban, and deaf/hearing loss issues. Her hand processed super 8 films and videos have been featured in one-woman screenings at Visual Studies Workshop (Rochester) and Massachusetts College of Art. Her video close yr hearing for the capshuns was recently featured at Intermedia Arts (Minneapolis); close yr hearing for the capshuns received the Grand Prize at CEPA GalleryÕs (Buffalo) 2001 Expose Yourself exhibition, and screened at the Thaw Festival (2001, Iowa City.) Her work has shown in festivals and group shows such the Frameline Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (2001, San Francisco), Inside Out Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (2001, Toronto) MIX NYC: The Lesbian & Gay Experimental Film Festival (2000), Flaming Festival (2001, Minneapolis), Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center, Image Out Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (1999, 2000 Rochester), 2001 Super Super 8 World Tour, and Splice This! International Super 8 Festival (2000, 2001 Toronto.) She is the recipient of a 2001 Experimental Television Center Finishing Fund Grant, a 1999-00 Upstate Media Regrant/Residency from the Media Center @ Visual Studies Workshop (Rochester), a 1999 County Initiative Media Grant from the Arts Council in Buffalo & Erie County, and three SOS grants from NYFA. Her residency at Visual Studies Workshop in 2000 culminated in the creation and screening of close yr hearing for the capshuns, an experimental video about hearing loss. A site-specific Spacelab multi-media installation, close yr hearing for the capshuns, was exhibited at Spaces Gallery in Cleveland Nov-Dec 2000. Her film Dear Joan is distributed by Frameline. She will be teaching a week-long workshop at Visual Studies Workshop in Summer 2001: "Poetry Film: Handprocessing Super 8 Film."
