Elizabeth Switzer
Artist and Activist

It is hard to separate the humor from the pain. -Jeffery McDaniel
Biography Elizabeth Switzer is an emerging hybrid-media artist, writer, and independent curator who currently resides in Buffalo, NY.
Her interest in art began in her childhood, growing up in a working class family in the rural town of Sodus, NY. After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from SUNY Oswego she was awarded a full scholarship for the MFA program at the University at Buffalo Art Department in Buffalo, NY. Entering graduate school as a painting major she has now moved to installation and performance work, which she also exhibits through the use of digital photography. She graduated from the University at Buffalo in May of 2004.
Artist Statement
My work investigates the gendered experience, as it is understood through biology and memory. Using the tradition of quilting as a way of storytelling, and sewing as a means of pulling together fragments, I attempt to tell the stories that are not heard. I use humor and exaggeration to evoke a gross fascination with the feminine dis-eased body. Playing on the audience s level of comfort, I lure them into false security through exhibitions that force them to become the unwitting voyeur. As they enter the interior spaces of my installations they find themselves left to reconcile the awkward reality of what it reveals.
