Publishing Through Us

Evolutionary Girls registered as a small publisher to provide access for people who wanted get there work out into the world without the censorship and hoop jumping that can come with dealing with more traditional publishers. Evolutionary Girls has no employees. Everything is done on a VERY grassroots, volunteer basis.

If you use us as your publisher of note you will end up with a book that is published by Evolutionary Girls with an ISBN number, a Library of Congress number and, assuming you purchase a distribution package through the print on demand company we use , your book will be sold on Amazon and many other online retailers world wide. As of March 2011 the cost for all of this would be about $175. That is the price that the print on demand company charges, not what Evolutionary Girls charges. We do not have any part in any financial transactions re: your book.

The process for using us as a publisher of note is:
1. An author will contact the director of the group at spiraltri@hotmail.com. Please use the subject line "interested in publishing through evolutionary girls"
2. The author will be asked for a description of the project.
3. Assuming that the project fits within our mission statement the author is sent instructions in re: to how to get an isbn/distribution package, what the process is, and what we will need from them. We generally would only exclude projects that can be seen as oppressive or harmful towards groups or individuals. At this point we will also ask you to sign an agreement that basically includes what is included on this page.
4. Once the ISBN is obtained we apply for an library of congress (loc) # and get that to the author. The author includes the isbn, loc and that we are the publisher of note in all pertinent places in the book.
5. We ask that the author send us a copy of the book.
6. The author is responsible to send the loc a copy of the book (it is required if you get an loc#). Because we are a non-funded group we cannot be responsible for sending the copies to the loc, so it is super important that the author's do this because otherwise we are not meeting our obligations with them.
7. The author will need to maintain their own account on the print on demand site and make sure that any monies received for books go directly to them under their own tax id (social security) number.
8. Evolutionary Girls does not make any money on any of the books. You are responsible to report any income to the appropriate agencies (IRS, etc.). All financial transactions are between you and the print on demand company.
9. We do not maintain copyright over the books, the individual authors do. Please make sure that your copyright page clearly states that you (the author) hold the copyright.

Because we are not paid to do any of this the responsibility falls on the author to essentially self-publish as a member of Evolutionary Girls. We will certainly give you any information we have, but we can not research or problem solve for you re: technical issues that might arise as you design your book and upload it onto the print on demand site that we use. We cannot design your book for you, but we are happy to recommend designers that we have used and loved, and you are welcome to post to the evolutionary girls website and ask if anyone is currently for hire in this capacity. The same is true for editing. We cannot edit or proofread for you but we'd be happy to recommend people we have used and/or you are welcome to post to the listserve and see if anyone is available for hire. Please do not ask Evolutionary Girls members to work for free. Consider bartering services if finances are an issue.

It is very important that you include the loc, isbn and publisher information correctly in your book and that each author take responsibility for making sure that their publication does not violate any policies, rules or laws. Evolutionary Girls and its members/director ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE for any acts of plagiarism, false claims that individual authors make or any other legal issues that arise from the publishing of your book. By agreeing to use Evolutionary Girls as the publisher of note for your book you are agreeing to self-publish your text and take full responsibility for that text.
